It is time to start closing redundant Army Knowledge Online (AKO) email accounts for Army users of DoD Enterprise Email (EE).

One outcome driving the Army EE cost benefit analysis was the elimination of redundant email accounts and storage. As of today, there are over 534K provisioned DoD EE accounts (Army, DISA, JS, and EUCOM).

I have directed our team to begin the deactivation of AKO email accounts for 430K Army users of DoD EE by October 1, 2012. These users are a specific subset of the total AKO DoD EE users. We will continue to deactivate AKO email accounts as users migrate to DoD EE.

Thanks to DISA, the Defense Manpower Data Center DMDC, NETCOM, and our other mission partners, the Army exceeded 500K users on DoD Enterprise Email (EE) this week. In addition, there are nearly 18K users from the Joint Staff, DISA, and U.S. European Command. We are on track to migrate all Army users by March 2013.

On June 14th the Army celebrates its 237th birthday, marking the day in June 1775 when the Continental Congress approved a unified force to battle for freedom from the British crown. Once independence was won, the Founding Fathers vigorously debated the future of the Army. Should the new country have a standing army controlled by and responsible only to the central government?
