As part of Department of Defense (DOD) network modernization efforts, the Army continues to optimize operational effectiveness, increase network and information security and improve efficiencies to enable success for today and tomorrow.

Delivering network capabilities to the Army is a team effort - we are all responsible for doing our part to ensure that the network is effective, efficient and secure, and that we continue to be good stewards of taxpayer dollars and trust.

Now we need the help of all users to maximize our efforts and efficiencies.

The Army's Office of the Chief Information Officer (CIO)/G-6 implemented Enterprise Email in 2010 to improve email capabilities and reduce costs. In July 2013, the Army Program Executive Office Enterprise Information Systems (PEO EIS) worked with the Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) to complete the Army's migration to DEE, moving existing Army accounts to DISA infrastructure and resulting in the creation of more than 1.5 million DEE accounts.

When the Army completed DEE migrations, it did not enforce mailbox size limits or email retention policies, meaning users could store as much email for as long as they wanted. The exponential growth of storage consumption supporting mailboxes is on an unsustainable path.

The Army has gone to great lengths to reduce the cost of its email service. In addition to service continuation and more efficient use of Army resources, vigilant management of DEE mailbox size will improve the performance of DEE accounts as its performance is directly impacted by mailbox size. Effective management of mailbox sizes will improve operational performance and manage storage consumption costs Army-wide.

PEO EIS joins the CIO/G-6 and DISA in encouraging you, our Army teammates, to contribute to this effort without leaving their desks -- by managing the storage size of your individual DEE mailboxes.

Currently, each individual's mailbox has a limit that is determined by mission need -- either 512MB for basic users or 4GB for business users. The Army began enforcement of the 512MB mailbox size limit on March 12, and those affected DEE account holders with 512MB mailbox size limits have already begun effective mailbox management.

To continue the drive toward optimized effectiveness, security, and efficiencies, DEE's service provider -- DISA -- will begin to enforce the Army's DEE service level agreement limits of 4GB per mailbox for business users on October 1. This limitation is due to the Department of Defense Enterprise Email (Enterprise Email or DEE) Enterprise Service Level Agreement the Army has negotiated with DISA to control program cost.

Between now and October 1, these limitations will be phased in. For the majority of DEE users who are already managing their mailbox size within the 4GB limit, there will be no impact. However, DEE users who exceed the limits will begin to receive warnings and instructions on how to manage their mailbox size in June. Once the limitations are in place, mailboxes that continue to exceed limits will lose functionality on October 1 until the size is reduced.
